The Smock is a venerable piece of workwear has been an essential outer layer for over a century, popular with painters, sculptors, potters and craftsmen. A classic example of functional, utilitarian clothing, they were originally made for sailors and cut from sailcloth, making this garment a strong and sturdy extra layer.

Known for keeping  fishermen warm and dry, it was also comfortable and easy to work in. The slightly shortened sleeves prevented cuffs getting wet – a feature also seen on Guernsey jumpers and Breton shirts – while the tight fit and high neck ensured maximum protection from the elements.

Cheap, tough and easy to find, smocks provided the perfect protection for artists as well as sailors. Sculptor Barbara Hepworth wore a smock as she sketched and in the early decades of the twentieth century when St. Ives in Cornwall became a popular destination for artists, they were inspired by the clothing worn by local mariners

In keeping with these origins, our smocks are made from durable, UK sourced fabric, which washes well and ages beautifully. Whether a sailor or sculptor, The Smock remains a functional and timeless garment.

Our durable workwear ages well to become an old friend and with our 10 year guarantee we will repair and return your workwear looking as good as new to give you many years of stress free wearing.
